11 militants give up fighting in W. Afghanistan

HERAT, Afghanistan, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- A total of 11 armed militants laid down arms and gave up fighting in Gazara district of the western Herat province 640 km west of Kabul on Wednesday. 
"With joining these Taliban fighters to peace process, the security would be further improved in the western region of Afghanistan," Herat provincial governor Mohammad Asif Rahimi said in his remarks at a ceremony to welcome the former militants. 
Rahimi also called on other Taliban fighters to follow the step and join the peace process to boost security in the country. 
The former militants who were active against government over the past few years also handed over their weapons to local authorities in the ceremony. 
Taliban militants who are active in parts of Herat province have yet to comment.
